Benefits of Turkish Passport

A Turkish passport gives its holder visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to more than 110 destinations, the right to live, work, vote and access healthcare and education as a citizen, and the ability to hold a second nationality. For property buyers, it is the end result of Turkey’s citizenship-by-investment route — a programme that, unlike most European equivalents, carries no minimum residency period. This page explains what the passport itself is worth; for the full investment threshold, requirements and step-by-step procedure, see our complete guide to Turkish Citizenship by Investment.

Advantages of the Turkish Passport

  • Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 110+ countries and territories, with simplified entry to many Schengen-zone states.
  • The right to live and work in Turkey indefinitely, with no separate residence permit required.
  • Full access to Turkey’s public healthcare, pension and education systems, including university enrolment on the same terms as other citizens.
  • The right to vote and stand in Turkish elections.
  • Dual citizenship is permitted — you generally do not have to renounce your existing nationality.
  • Eligibility for the U.S. E-2 investor visa, available to Turkish nationals under the Turkey–U.S. treaty and not open to citizens of most other countries.
  • Citizenship extends to your spouse and children under 18 at the same time.

Types of Turkish Passports

Turkey issues four passport types, distinguished by colour and holder category. Foreign investors who naturalise receive the ordinary (Bordo) passport.

1. Ordinary Passport (Bordo)

  • Issued to Turkish citizens for international travel — the document foreign investors receive on naturalisation.
  • Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 110+ countries.
  • Standard validity: 10 years.

2. Special Passport (Yeşil – Green)

  • Issued to senior government employees, certain civil servants and qualifying professionals such as lawyers and university faculty.
  • Carries broader visa-free access than the ordinary passport.

3. Service Passport (Gri – Grey)

  • Issued to state employees and official representatives travelling abroad on government business.
  • Provides official-travel privileges and additional visa exemptions.

4. Diplomatic Passport (Siyah – Black)

  • Reserved for diplomats, high-ranking officials and members of parliament.
  • Visa-free entry to most countries worldwide.

How Long Are Turkish Passports Valid?

  • Ordinary passports are valid for 10 years.
  • Green, grey and diplomatic passports are issued for 5 years.

Renewals are handled through Turkey’s Population and Citizenship Offices, or at any Turkish consulate or embassy if you live abroad.

Turkish vs. European & Other Global Passports

How the Turkish passport compares with a selection of others on mobility, investment access and residency. Figures are indicative; for Turkey’s current programme terms see our citizenship-by-investment guide.

Passport Visa-Free Destinations Citizenship by Investment U.S. E-2 Eligible Residency Required
Turkey 110+ Yes — real estate route (see guide for current threshold) Yes None
Portugal 190+ Yes (investment route) No 5 years
United Kingdom 185+ No No N/A
U.A.E. 170+ Yes (high-value investment) No None
United States 185+ No N/A N/A

The Turkish route stands out on three points: a real-estate path to citizenship that many Western passports do not offer, no residency requirement, and E-2 investor-visa access to the United States.

Dual Citizenship and the Turkuaz Card

A person holding the nationality of two countries at once has dual citizenship, and Turkey permits it — in most cases you keep your original passport alongside your Turkish one. If your home country does not allow dual nationality, the Turkuaz (Turquoise) Card grants you nearly all the rights of a Turkish citizen, with the exception of voting and standing for election. You can read more in our overview of Turkey dual citizenship.

After Your Property Purchase

Once you own qualifying property and meet the programme conditions, the application itself is straightforward:

  • Where to apply: through your local provincial office in Turkey, or via a Turkish consulate if you reside abroad.
  • Documents: typically passport, residence record, birth certificate, photographs and the title-deed paperwork for your property; requirements vary by applicant.
  • Processing: timelines depend on individual circumstances; you can track progress through the Ministry of the Interior.
  • Family: your spouse and children under 18 are included in the same application.

For the full eligibility criteria, costs and required holding period, see the Turkish Citizenship by Investment guide. If you buy through Maximos Real Estate, our team manages the purchase and the citizenship application end to end.

Why Turkey?

Turkey bridges Europe and Asia, combining a strategic location with a large domestic market, a growing economy and a property sector that has long attracted foreign buyers. For investors, the appeal is practical: comparatively accessible entry prices, an active rental market across coastal and major-city locations, and a citizenship route that turns a real-estate purchase into a second passport without requiring you to relocate. The government actively supports foreign investment and has streamlined the citizenship process for property buyers in recent years.

Yes. Turkey allows dual citizenship, so in most cases you can keep your existing nationality.

How long does citizenship by investment take?

Most applications are concluded within roughly 3–6 months, after which you can apply for the passport. Timelines vary by case; see the full guide for the current process and requirements.

Can my family obtain Turkish passports through my investment?

Yes. Your spouse and children under 18 are included in the same application and naturalise alongside you. Full eligibility details are in the citizenship-by-investment guide.
